Energy and Protein Bars: The Guide to Read Nutritional Label

Are you looking for the perfect sports bar, but you can't choose among the vast market offer?

The sports nutrition market is broad, and there are plenty of foods and supplements. Thus, orienting yourself among the market offer is challenging, as well as choosing the most healthy, effective and tasteful product. In particular, energy and protein bars, of different brands, cover a significant slice of the market.

Energy and Protein Bars

On one hand, cheap energy and protein bars will contain added sugars, artificial sweeteners, flavors, coatings, and additives, including substances that help increase shelf life, aka preservatives.

On the other hand, brands that develop a yummy and all-natural snack pay close attention to the use and selection of premium ingredients only. Hence, they ban the above-mentioned artificial additives, sweeteners, preservatives, and added sugars. Perhaps, the shelf life won't be so long, but from a nutritional point of view, these bars are cleaner, more effective and can be compared to fresh food.

If you look out for your health and your wellness, nourish your body with 100% natural food, also when you do physical activities.

The Guide to Nutritional Label Reading

How to choose the best energy and protein bars? Our guide is the answer to become nutritional-label-savvy.

  1. What's inside my sports bar
  2. What are the ingredient list and the nutritional tab?
  3. What is better I find in the ingredients list
  4. What should I better avoid eating

What's inside my sports bar?

Simply read the ingredient list. Generally, an all-natural product has only high-quality organic ingredients and is free from added sugars and artificial sweeteners (sucrose, glucose, maltose, and so on). Artificial sweeteners might be lower in calories, but they might a negative effect on our body, especially as for intestinal flora.

What are the ingredients list and the nutritional tab?

The ingredient list is a simple summary of the bar's ingredients. While the nutritional tab provides the amount of protein, carbohydrates, simple sugars, fats, and other micronutrients, contained in 100 g of product or a single dose. Carbs, or sugars, are macronutrients naturally contained in foods and form an integral part of sports bars; the proportion of carbohydrates is different between protein and energy bars. Consequently, sugars are a must-have in a bar's nutritional labels, but they should not be in the ingredients list.

What is better I find in the ingredients list?

Ingredients must be all-natural as well as sugars. This means, first of all, organic and free from additives. Like a home-made snack, they have to taste great with no need for artificial sweeteners and aromas. Fruit and nuts are packed with sugars, and nuts are the perfect key ingredient. Dates, bananas, or dried apricots , other than being fabulous nutritious, are also excellent to give the bar a nice texture. Nuts (such as hazelnuts or almonds) gives crunchiness and energy. Furthermore, in combination with ingredients like cocoa powder, cinnamon, cocoa butter, or botanical extracts, the anti-oxidant power increases, with no need of artificial preservatives to keep the product fresh.

What should I better avoid eating?

You should avoid buying sports bars with the following ingredients: sucrose, dextrose, polydextrose, glucose syrup, sorbitol, and preservatives such as sulfur dioxide, hydrogenated fats, and palm oil.

Remember, LESS IS MORE!

All-natural products have a short and simple ingredient list.
